Atomic Playing Cards
Design Brief
With this brief we were tasked to research graphic design eras and pick three to inspire some playing card designs, then to pick our favourite
concept and to then progress it into multiple playing card designs.
My Approach
For my design era, I picked The Atomic Age. The aspects of the style era have always inspired me, and I love coming up with ideas and sketches surrounding it. When going into this I instantly knew that I would be doing the clubs card, as it was the easiest to turn into an atomic explosion. The mad scientist being the Joker also seemed to fit just right when designing.
Technique
For the creation of the Joker and Explosion cards, I sketched it out on some paper before moving it over to Adobe Illustrator where I brought them to life with the pen tool and the paint tool, using some gradients for the explosion.
The back of the card design, I experimented in Illustrator, knowing I wanted to do something to do with an atom, which is the heart of The Atomic Age. I eventually got to the design we have now, drawing inspiration from the old atomic age movie posters.
While deciding what style to go for with my playing cards, I was trying to decide between the Atomic Age style or the Art Deco poster style. Eventually, I settled with the Atomic Age style, knowing that i would be able to do something fun with this design and less serious then Art Deco.
When considering what suit I wanted to do, I had to make sure I would be able to manipulate it to match the style of the style I wanted, which is why i chose the clubs. I was easily able to make it look like a mushroom cloud.
Trying to decide the mad scientist was a bit tricker, as I wasn’t sure if I wanted him as a joker or king, but eventually landed on king as I felt that was more a mad scientists nature
